(SCA) rough draft of my device

here's what i've got so far for my device.

i think the blazon would be, "Or, a fess wavy gules between a domestic cat courant contourny sable and an iris blossom gules."

i rather like the fess wavy, more than just a plain fess, but it still looks a tad naked. i'm thinking about changing it to a fess wavy cotised.

what would be cool is if i could make it three red stripes of equal size instead of one fat one between two skinny ones, but i'm not sure how to do that. it might also be a tad too much like the old vietnamese flag then (which was yellow with three narrow red horizontal stripes in the middle).

Looks good so far! I'm not sure I've ever seen an iris blossom used without the stem -- may I post the URL for your blog to the SCA Heralds list so that some other people can take a look at it and give opinions?

Very nice blazoning, BTW, getting the "contourny" in there and all. If you're interested in sticking with heraldry after your and Tod's devices are finished, I'll be doing lessons for my two current students at Muldoon's after baronial meeting on the first Wednesday of each month, and Vashti brings all her books and does consultations *at* meeting on the second Wednesday; I think she may also be planning to start some classes.

if i have time to go to meetings, maybe. i don't want to commit to anything until i have a better idea of my schedule for next year (and get step 1 of the boards out of the way).

the contourny bit was because i used the same cat as a different device, and so i just copied that bit of blazon as well. i suppose i could have just turned the cat around when i was cut/pasting the thing together, but i liked the way it was facing (:

oh, and go ahead and toss this at some more heralds... i would hope that irises don't have to have stems, since roses dont, but they are drawn from a different perspective, and that might be the difference.

You can have the three stripes the same size. They'd be called 'bars' instead of a 'fess', which would make your blazon:

Or, three bars wavy gules between a domestic cat courant contourny sable and an iris blossom gules.

(I found this one from Katerin's post to the SCAHRLDS list)

Oh! I completely missed the concern about Vietnam's flag. If the flag's stripes are straight (not wavy), you would be at least technically clear. Since the cat and iris add some definite visual weight, I wouldn't see a major visual problem either. It would be evocative, but not presumptuous, I'd think.

i'm confused. i was under the impression that bars and other "diminutives are not registered in SCA heraldry". though i know i've seen barry wavy stuff before... i kind of thought that it had to be a field or field division though.

The SCA won't register a single diminutive. So you can't have one tiny, skinny bar or bendlet or palet, etc. Two or more, though, is ok.

ahhhhh. is that because a group of diminutives is more visible than just one?
